Master Site Plan Survey Resident Input Critical to Process

What a Master Plan Survey Means for the Mapleton Park Community
By Debbie Kranzler, Community Coordinator
back to top
This edition of the Mapleton Mobile-izer contains a survey designed to gather all residents' ideas on how Mapleton might look in the near and not-so-near future. The survey does NOT guarantee that changes or improvements WILL occur. Out of all the hopes, desires and dreams of residents will come a plan for what NEEDS to be done (for example, replacing the ailing sewer system) and what the community WANTS. The next challenge will be getting funding to realize those dreams. However, the dreaming is very important for without it, no improvements will ever get done.
This survey is the first formal step in the community participation process. The remaining steps are outlined in the accompanying article. It is critical that every homeowner in Mapleton fill out the cover page of the survey, whether or not you belong to MHA. (Renters, we would still like to get your input, but your votes, unfortunately, cannot be counted.) In fact, it is so important that Housing and Human Services City Staff have agreed to give a $5 discount off August lot rent for each household that returns the signed cover page. The contents of the survey will be kept confidential; i.e. your name and lot number will be separated from your survey answers, so we won't have a record of who said what. Just like absentee voting in municipal elections, we must verify that the surveys are valid and that each household submits only one. If you do not want to fill out the survey, we still need you to check the box that says, "I choose not to participate," then sign and return the cover sheet. The deadline to respond is Thursday, June 21, 5:00pm. You will be reminded several times of that deadline.
There will be an MHA Information meeting on Sunday, June 10, 5:30 pm at Unity Church. The primary reason for this meeting is to see the plans that the Public Works department has for construction of the Goose Creek flood control channel through Mapleton. In addition, there will be time for questions about the Master Site Plan process and the survey. This is also a great time to hand in your completed survey!
Members of the Canvassing Committee will be going door-to-door during the week of June 11-17, offering assistance with filling out the survey, collecting completed surveys, answering any questions that you might have about the process.
Please turn in your survey, if you own your mobile home regardless of whether you belong to MHA at one of the following meetings or locations:
At the 6/10 Informational Meeting at Unity Church.
To a Canvassing Committee member
In the drop box at the MHA kiosk in Dumpster park or the laundry room.
To Debbie Kranzler, Community Coordinator, and Mark Reeder, Business Committee member, #14; Ben Jensen, MHA President, #178; Alex Wilson, MHA VP, #58; Bob Pressey, MHA Business Committee member, #147.
At Thistle Community Housing, 1845 Folsom Ave., attention Larisa LaBrant.
This would be a great time to join MHA if you have not yet paid your $5.00 for 2001. And remember you get to deduct $5 from your August lot rent payment.
In the last few days before the deadline, residents who have not turned in a survey cover sheet will be contacted to remind them about the importance of this survey. The sooner you turn in your survey, the fewer times the canvassers will be knocking on your door! They are glad to help out and answer questions, but if you would rather be left alone, turn in your survey early!
Master Site Plan Process
by the editors
The coming three months will be busy for residents of Mapleton Mobile Home Park (MMHP). By early August the community will have given input on needs and desires, given feedback and voted on one of three Master Plans and then given approval (hopefully!) to one final synthesis of the most popular features from the plans. Ideally, all homeowners would participate in each step. It does not matter if you belong to MHA, although, of course, you are invited to join. It is so important that every resident be heard, that even those who do not want to participate will be asked to sign a paper that says, " I choose not to participate." That ensures that no one is missed by accident.
Why is this so important? Because based on resident input, blueprints will be drawn that will determine the way that MMHP will look for many years to come. No promises can be made about improvements; none will need to be raised, through grants, loans and lot fees. That means that probably some great ideas will be put off for a few years, but it is still necessary to do the planning now so that the future is as flexible as possible.
The following is a list of all the steps coming in the next three months. A calendar on the last page of the Mobile-izer shows all of these dates.
6/4
The survey is distributed to all homeowners with this edition of the Mapleton mobile-izer.
6/10, Sunday, 5:30pm Unity Church
MHA Informational Meeting with the Department of Utilities. Douglas Sullivan will present three possible plans for the Goose Creek flood control channel through MMHP. Residents will have the opportunity to ask questions and voice their opinions. Please attend if possible! This will be residents' last chance to have a say on the plans for the channel. Three years ago, residents banded together and lobbied successfully to have the design for the channel to have the smallest impact possible on our community. Now the final plan is about to be selected so it important that residents once again be heard.
This meeting will also be a time to turn in completed surveys or ask any questions you may have.
6/21 Deadline for turning in surveys.
6/22-7/14 Planners will take all the information on those surveys and come up with three possible Master Site Plans for MMHP.
7/15, Sunday, 6:30pm Dumpster Park
MHA Master Plan Open House. Come see the three plans, ask questions, give input and vote!
7/21 Deadline for giving feedback on the three options and casting your vote. Once again, even if you do not want to select a plan, you will be asked to sign a cover page saying that you choose not to vote.
7/22-7/28 Planners will take all the votes and the feedback and come up with a final synthesis for the Master Site Plan for Mapleton.
7/29 The final plan will be published in the Mapleton Mobile-izer, posted on the MHA web site and at the MHA kiosk in Dumpster Park.
8/5 Sunday, 5:30pm, Unity Church
MHA Quarterly Meeting, including a simple yes or no vote on the final site plan. 8/11 Deadline to vote on the final site plan. Every homeowner will be asked to vote, whether or not you attend the Quarterly Meeting and whether or not you belong to MHA. Once again, if you choose not to vote, you will be asked to sign a piece of paper saying that.
8/25 1-4pm, Dumpster Park.
Summer Party! Our last Goose Creek Festival in Dumpster park. By this time next year, Dumpster Park will be part of the Goose Creek channel and the Festival will have to find a new location. Meanwhile, come meet your neighbors, eat some good food and congratulate yourself and your neighbors for living in such a friendly, involved community!
